Sub-Zero Refrigerator Error Code EC40
Freezer compressor running too long — extended run time fault.
What EC40 means.
EC40 is logged when the freezer compressor has been running for longer than the firmware expects without the cabinet reaching its target temperature. Sub-Zero uses two independent compressors on Classic 600/700 dual-zone units — EC40 is the freezer side, EC50 is the fresh-food side. The most common root cause is restricted airflow over the condenser coils at the top of the unit. On Sub-Zero, those coils are notorious for collecting dust, pet hair, and kitchen grease since they sit behind the upper grille where almost nobody thinks to clean them.
Most common causes.
-
Condenser coils packed with dust or grease at the upper grille (most common).
-
Condenser fan motor failed or running slow.
-
Door gasket leaking warm air into the freezer.
-
Sealed-system refrigerant low (less common — see EC15).
Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.
-
Pop the upper grille and vacuum the condenser coils — go gentle with a brush attachment.
-
Listen for the condenser fan with the grille off; it should be moving real air, not just spinning slowly.
-
Check the freezer door gasket — slip a dollar bill in the door and close it; if you can pull it out with no drag, the gasket is leaking.
-
If EC40 returns within 48 hours of cleaning, the condenser fan or sealed system needs service.

We have used this company several times now. I wanted to leave a review because Ivan really went above and beyond for this last repair the day before a big holiday weekend. He saved us! 100% recommend him. Besides being so knowledgeable which helps with diagnosis to repairs he is courteous and timely and we have found his prices to be very fair. It's hard to find a trustworthy reliable repair person. We have Ivan on text now!

Highly recommended. Been in business with Ivan 3 different times with different appliances and all were satisfactory with problem fixed. He even figured out an indirect minor issue and fixed it for us with no charge without us asking for it. Ivan will be the first one I call in any cases of an appliance that needs repair.
