What EC24 means.

EC24 is the more severe sibling of EC20. The controller energized the defrost heater on schedule, but the coil temperature did not rise at all — meaning the heater is open-circuit, the safety thermostat is open, or the wiring to the heater is broken. Once EC24 logs, frost will build on the evaporator until airflow stops; you typically see the freezer struggle first, then the fresh-food side warm up over 48–96 hours. This is one of the codes that produces the classic "fridge stopped cooling overnight" callout.

Most common causes.

  • Defrost heater element open-circuit (most common — heater coils fail with age).

  • Defrost safety thermostat (bimetal) failed open.

  • Wire harness to the heater chewed or broken near the evaporator pan.

  • Control board defrost relay failed.

Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Manual defrost: unplug for 24 hours with both doors open and towels at the base.

  2. After defrost, restore power and listen — if the compressor runs and you hear the evaporator fan, EC24 may have temporarily cleared.

  3. It will return. Plan for service before food starts spoiling again.

  4. Do not bypass the safety thermostat — it is a fire-prevention device.

  • Highly recommended. Been in business with Ivan 3 different times with different appliances and all were satisfactory with problem fixed. He even figured out an indirect minor issue and fixed it for us with no charge without us asking for it. Ivan will be the first one I call in any cases of an appliance that needs repair.
