What EC06 means.

EC06 is the evaporator-coil thermistor version of EC05. This sensor sits clipped to the cold side of the evaporator coil inside the freezer section and tells the board when to start and end the defrost cycle. When EC06 is logged, the board can no longer time defrosts properly, so frost typically builds on the coil over the next 24–72 hours — which then strangles airflow and causes the fresh-food side to warm up. EC06 is one of the more common Sub-Zero codes on 5–8 year old units.

Most common causes.

  • Evaporator thermistor failed open or shorted (most common).

  • Connector at the back of the evaporator panel is wet from a slow drain-line leak.

  • Frost has crushed the sensor wire against the coil bracket.

  • Main control board input fault (rare).

Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Listen for the evaporator fan — if it is loud or grinding, frost may already be building behind the back panel.

  2. Check the fresh-food temperature with a glass thermometer — if it has crept above 42°F, do not delay service.

  3. Do not attempt to remove the rear evaporator panel — on Sub-Zero it is sealed with foamed-in tubing that breaks easily.

  4. Schedule a diagnostic; this fault almost always needs a sensor swap plus a full manual defrost.

  • Highly recommended. Been in business with Ivan 3 different times with different appliances and all were satisfactory with problem fixed. He even figured out an indirect minor issue and fixed it for us with no charge without us asking for it. Ivan will be the first one I call in any cases of an appliance that needs repair.
