What PO means.

PO is the "Power Outage" indicator. It does not mean anything is broken — it means the unit lost power long enough for the freezer to warm to 18°F or higher. Whirlpool flashes PO so you can decide whether to keep or toss frozen food (a freezer that briefly hit 30°F is fine; one that hit 50°F for hours is not). PO will keep flashing until you press the "Measured Fill" or "Confirm" button to acknowledge it.

Most common causes.

  • Recent power outage (most common — utility blip or storm).

  • Plug was pulled and re-inserted recently.

  • GFCI outlet tripped and was reset.

  • Surge protector tripped.

Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Press the "Measured Fill" button (most French door models) or hold the temperature button for 3 seconds to acknowledge.

  2. PO should disappear and the display returns to normal.

  3. Check frozen food: if anything has soft-thawed (you can poke through the surface easily), toss it.

  4. If PO returns after acknowledging, the power is unstable — check the outlet and breaker.
