What E3 means.

E3 (commonly seen as F3-E3 on older models) flags the defrost system as failing. The board energized the defrost heater on schedule, but either the heater is open-circuit, the safety thermostat is open, or the board never actually sent the signal because a relay failed. Frost builds on the evaporator coil within days and the fresh-food side warms up. E3 is one of the most common Whirlpool service calls in years 5–8 of unit life.
