What E02 means.

E02 is the freezer-section twin of E01. The freezer thermistor is reading impossible values (open or shorted) and the controller cannot trust it. Result: defrost and fan control fall back to timed cycles instead of demand-based ones, which usually over-cools the freezer and may form frost in the fresh-food side. E02 is common on Thermador Freedom freezer columns 5–8 years old.

Most common causes.

  • Freezer thermistor failed open or shorted.

  • Connector at the rear of the freezer cabinet corroded.

  • Wire harness pinched during install or service.

  • Control board freezer input failed (rare).

Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Unplug the unit at the breaker for 5 minutes.

  2. Restore power; if E02 returns immediately, sensor replacement is the fix.

  3. Watch for frost forming on items in the fresh-food side — that is a sign the freezer is over-cooling because the board has lost feedback.

  4. Schedule service before frost damage spreads.
