What 8E means.

8E on a Samsung points to an ice-maker sensor or mechanism fault. The controller saw that the ice maker did not complete a normal cycle: the mold thermostat did not call, the ejector arm did not move, or the optical sensor cannot read bin level. 8E is one of the most-Googled Samsung codes because ice-maker issues on Samsung French door units are very common in years 2–5.

Most common causes.

  • Ice maker mold thermostat failed (most common).

  • Ejector motor stalled in a fused ice block.

  • Optical sensor blocked by dust or condensation.

  • Ice maker module hardware failed.

Try this first — safe DIY troubleshooting.

  1. Pull the ice bin and look at the mold — if cubes have fused into a single block, break them up gently with a plastic spoon.

  2. Wipe the optical sensors (small black domes on the inside of the bin housing).

  3. Press and hold the "Test" button on the ice maker (small recessed button) for 3 seconds — this forces a cycle.

  4. If the ejector still does not move, the module needs replacement.

  • Highly recommended. Been in business with Ivan 3 different times with different appliances and all were satisfactory with problem fixed. He even figured out an indirect minor issue and fixed it for us with no charge without us asking for it. Ivan will be the first one I call in any cases of an appliance that needs repair.
