Magic Chef Compact Repair in Westminster: Thermostat Replacement

Magic Chef compact refrigerator in a Westminster apartment

The Call from Bolsa Avenue

A property manager who runs a multi-unit building off Bolsa Avenue in Westminster called me Monday morning. One of his tenants in a studio unit had a Magic Chef HMDR450SE compact refrigerator (the 4.5 cu ft mini-fridge size that fits under a counter or against a wall in small apartments). The unit was running continuously without ever cycling off, the freezer compartment was iced over solid, and the tenant said it had been running like that for almost a week. Power bill was creeping up and the tenant wanted it fixed.

These compact fridges are everywhere in Westminster’s multi-family housing — apartment buildings off Beach Boulevard, the older complexes along Westminster Boulevard, and the dorm-style units that landlords stock in studios. They’re inexpensive, they’re disposable in a sense, but they’re also fixable in many cases for less than the cost of replacement.

What I Found

Pulled the unit out from under the counter. The compressor was hot — running constantly for days will do that. The condenser coil on the back was a little dusty but not catastrophic. The cabinet temp was actually fine — 36°F in the fresh-food area — but the freezer was completely glazed over with frost and the unit was just never shutting off.

Magic Chef compact fridges of this generation use a simple bimetallic thermostat (no electronic control board on the cheaper models). The thermostat has a capillary tube that runs into the cabinet and senses cabinet temperature. When the bimetal fails closed, the compressor never gets a “satisfied” signal, so it just runs forever.

I tested the thermostat with my meter. Contacts welded shut, no continuity break at any temperature. Classic mechanical thermostat failure.

The Repair

Replacement thermostat for this Magic Chef model is about $25 in parts — these are essentially commodity components and you can get a working aftermarket equivalent for half what an OEM costs. I had a generic-fit thermostat on the truck that matched the spec. Install took about 25 minutes — disconnect power, pull the front control housing, swap the old thermostat for the new one with matching capillary tube length, route the new capillary tube along the same channel as the old one (this matters — the sensor has to be in the same physical location for the calibration to be correct).

After install, I plugged the unit back in and watched it pull cabinet temp down. About 40 minutes later, the compressor cycled off for the first time in a week. New thermostat clicked open at proper temperature. I left the unit running for another 30 minutes to confirm a complete on-off-on cycle.

The frozen-over freezer melted naturally over the next four hours since the unit was actually cycling properly now and going through its normal warming pattern between compressor runs.

Why Compact Fridges Fail Like This

Westminster has a lot of multi-family rental housing where landlords supply basic appliances and don’t replace them until something major fails. Compact fridges like Magic Chef, Galanz, and Frigidaire compact models all use similar bimetal thermostats — there’s nothing particularly fancy about the design — and they routinely last 5-7 years before the thermostat contacts wear out from constant cycling. The failure mode is usually “fails closed” (runs forever) rather than “fails open” (won’t run at all), because the contacts wear through arc erosion.

For a landlord, a $215 repair on a compact unit makes sense if the rest of the fridge is mechanically sound. If the compressor is also tired, replacement starts to make more sense.

Magic Chef is a value-tier brand and most of the units are workable as long as the sealed system is intact. For the brand rundown, see our Magic Chef refrigerator service page.

What It Cost

Diagnostic was $65, thermostat plus labor came in at $215 total. 3-month warranty on parts and labor. The property manager was happy — full repair came in under what a new compact unit costs at Walmart, and we billed it to his maintenance account same day.
