SY EF on a Frigidaire (sometimes displayed as 5Y EF — same code, just a display quirk) stands for "System Evaporator Fault." The controller has detected a problem in the evaporator-fan circuit: the fan motor is dead, the wiring is damaged, or the control board fan-driver has failed. Result: the freezer keeps making cold air but the fan does not move it, so the freezer fills with frost and the fresh-food side warms because no airflow reaches it. SY EF is one of the most common Frigidaire codes on side-by-side and French-door units in years 4–7.
